Aaron Rodgers will be trying to find his way in first-year Packers coach Matt LaFleur’s offense as the two navigate how much freedom the quarterback will have in the new attack.
In this year’s edition of this competition, Aaron Rodgers will try to direct the Packers back into the playoffs after two straight losing seasons. He will have to prevent Khalil Mack and the remainder of the Bears’ pass rush. On offense, the Bears will want to rely on youth to repeat as NFC North champs, together with second-year expert Mitchell Trubisky at quarterback and newcomer David Montgomery at conducting back. The remainder of this week will be performed Sunday and ending with a double-header on Monday Night Football.
Highlights of the ancient games on Sunday comprise present league MVP Pat Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs at Jacksonville to play with the Jaguars and their brand new QB and former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles. Baker Mayfield and his brand new receiving goal Odell Beckham Jr. will start the season in the home as the Cleveland Browns host the Tennessee Titans
Games are broadcast on CBS and Fox on Sunday afternoons, NBC on Sunday nights, ESPN on Monday nights and the NFL Network on Thursday nights. Most of the Thursday night games are simulcast on Fox, Amazon Prime and Twitch.
The Bears, meanwhile, will look to affirm their place atop the NFC North after last season’s division crown. But outside linebacker Khalil Mack and the rest of the defense will be under the guidance of a new coordinator in Chuck Pagano after Vic Fangio became the head coach of the Denver Broncos. Chicago will also look to iron out its kicking issues after falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in last year’s NFC wild-card round on a deflected field goal attempt.
Here’s everything you need to know for the game:
Date: Thursday, Sept. 5
Kickoff time: 8:20 p.m. ET
Stream: NBCSports.com, NFL Game Pass (out of the market)
Location: Soldier Field, Chicago
Odds: Bears -3, over/under 46.5
Oddsmakers are favoring Chicago to come away with the victory at Soldier Field, installing the squad as a three-point favorite. The Bears have come a long way since last year’s opener, as they were 7.5-point underdogs against this same Packers foe. Although Green Bay would ultimately win that game—a Sunday Night Football thriller in which Chicago squandered a 20-point lead—the Bears had no issues covering the spread and made it clear that they would be a contender that season, going on to make the playoffs for the first time since 2010. Although Chicago would ultimately suffer heartbreak in the Wild Card game against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles, losing on a missed 43-yard field goal that hit both the upright and crossbar, the club appears poised to equal or even surpass its 12-4 record from last year and make an even deeper foray into the postseason. Vegas has the Bears at 12-1 to win the Super Bowl, tied with the Eagles and New Orleans Saints for best odds in the NFC and behind only the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs for top overall.
Green Bay went 6-9-1 last season—their worst record since 2008—but there’s renewed optimism about the Packers.
Matt LaFleur is the new head coach. He replaced Mike McCarthy, who was fired before the end of last season after his relationship with Aaron Rodgers broke down beyond repair.
The two-time MVP passed for 4,442 yards and 25 touchdowns for a 97.6 rating last season and remains one of the greatest signal-callers the NFL has ever seen.
Rodgers’ relationship with LaFleur, however, will be even more important to the Packers’ chances of returning to the playoffs than his talent.
Meanwhile, Mike Pettine has been confirmed as defensive coordinator. Big improvements are expected from the Packers’ defense this season.
Chicago and Green Bay are expected to battle it out for the NFC North title, although the Packers have an easier path than the Bears, who have the joint fifth-hardest schedule in the NFL.
